Inertia Creeps - Complete

Inertia Creeps

25+ hours

This began as a doodle in my sketchbook while I was doing laundry. After I posted it to my Facebook, a friend asked if I would be willing to sell him a print of it. That meant I actually needed to digitize it, and do it well. I worked on it from Tuesday, March 27th until just now on March 30th.. I worked on it close to 8 hours a day. I decided to use a matte colored background because I felt that adding any more detail to it would detract from the design. I chose blue because I felt the baby blue had more personality than white, but left the design to show itself. I had toyed around with a gradient backdrop, but it ended up detracting from it. I had also toyed with putting a layer over it and carving out the Massive Attack logo from it, but again, it did not work so well. I don't feel as though I can take as much pride as I should with this piece because the lyrics belong to someone else. I feel like this is fan art that should be left to my DeviantArt account. On the other hand, I worked really hard on this. I spent several days working on it, and I hand-shaped each letter one at a time. This wasn't just me shaping a font - this was me crafting each piece by itself.

I think in general, this is something I can be proud of, and I will definitely keep it in my portfolio as a testament to my use of Illustrator, and my knowledge of spacial design.

Inertia Creeps

A few weeks ago, I did a little doodle in my sketchbook. I am a huge fan of the band Massive Attack, and I love Robert Del Naja as an artist. So, I had put on a Trip Hop playlist on Spotify, and was just messing around with my sketchbook. I decided to draw the lyrics to the first verse of Inertia Creeps, which is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love it. The song is phenomenal. I started out with a sketch, and then I inked it with a .30 micron pen. I think some of the ink might have rubbed off when I was erasing the pencil marks though. I need to make sure I don't rub as hard next time.

This is the timeline so far. I've posted to my facebook and my DA account with three updates. I don't plan on updating again until at least all of the text is done - if not the entire piece.

I think the digital looks much better. I adjusted some of the lettering to fit it better so there is less leftover space that shouldn't be there. I want to re-do the text of "Recollect" because I think it's not as squared as the rest of the text. The rest of the text has a certain look to it, and I'd like it to all be similar. I removed the connective line in the first few lines of text. I decided I didn't like it quite as much and thought it looked better without it.

I'm not sure how I'll finish this though. I don't know if I want to keep the text black or color it.. or if I want a background color. I'm going to have to think about it.

However, I've spent 15+ hours on this, with 10 of that being today. My thumb went numb again from gripping the stylus. I need to set alarms for every two hours to make sure I get up, eat something, walk around.. and just generally stretch out. I was sitting so long today I was limping when I tried to walk to 7-11.

I think this is coming out pretty nice though :)

I created this after working on "Gathering Rain(bows)". I was wondering how the rainbow circles would look arranged differently. I arranged them in a circular pattern, since they were in a square beforehand. I wanted to arrange it so that they weren't symmetrical, but maintained some kind of visual continuity. I made sure to try and keep the colors and sizes even but separate. I used a black circle as a guideline for setting them up. Once they were all in place, I copied the black circle and adjusted the inside so that it was clear, leaving just the black outline. It leaves a nice frame around the image. I think this will likely be the last I do with this piece so as not to get repetitive. Unlike my mushroom series, this is still maintaining the same color scheme, just arranged differently. I might try to do it with grayscale later on though. Only time will tell!

I get a lot of inspiration from my music or whatever else I'm listening to. I was listening to a combination of Repo! The Genetic Opera, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and Supermassive Black Hole by Muse when I created this.
